- Horse Racing Systems That Really Work by Bill Peterson
I have been asked many times whether there is a horse racing system that really works. The quick answer to that question is, yes, but the longer, ambiguous, but more accurate answer is yes and no. I am not trying to be cute, just letting you know how complicated the question of horse racing systems really is.
- Avoid Betting on Fixed Races and Getting Stiffed at the Horse Track by Bill Peterson
Horse racing, like any human activity that involves money and risk, is sometimes a crooked game. In my opinion, after 50 years at the races as everything from a groom to an owner, most races are not fixed and the people who work at the race track are usually pretty honest. On the other hand, there is occasionally a fixed race.
- How to Make a Profit Betting on Horse Races by Bill Peterson
Some people think picking winners and making a profit betting on horse races are the same thing. But to a true professional horse player, those two activities are related, but not the same. While you have one group who will handicap a horse race and then bet the horse that they think is the best to win or perhaps in exotics, other will assign odds to each horse in the race and then work with that line.
- The Best Angle in Horse Racing Handicapping to Make a Profit From Your Bets by Bill Peterson
Do you wish you had an angle that actually made a profit when you bet on horse races? Everyone is looking for an easy to spot angle that will make money and won’t be bet down to ridiculous odds. The problem is, that once someone discovers a factor that points to lots of winners, the crowd soon finds out and you just can’t make a profit from it.
- Three Keys to Making Money Betting on Horse Races by Bill Peterson
Are you trying to make money betting on horse races, but seem to always lose? How serious are you about making a profit and what are you willing to give up in order to finally be able to leave the track with more money than you entered with? The problem may be that, though you are cashing lots of tickets, there is a hole in your pocket caused by other expenses or a hidden agenda.
- Winning Long Shot Bets in Horse Racing Handicapping by Bill Peterson
Finding a hidden long shot that wins at a good price is one of the great thrills for a handicapper. But there is usually a good reason for a horse going off at long odds and if you chase long shots, you’re bound to go broke real fast.
- Why Horse Racing Systems Are So Popular by Bill Peterson
Ever ask yourself why horse racing systems are so popular? I mean does anyone really sell a system for beating the races? Is it possible to buy a written method for beating the races and if so, why would anyone sell it?
- Alan Mccabe by Bob Roper
Alan McCabe has survived a mid-year move of stables and a couple of months when he didn’t have a runner. In the process he lost several of his best horses as his chief patron and owner of the Haygarth House stables Paul Dixon, brought in Jeremy Glover to take over being in charge. Alan though is now settled into his smart new stables at Averham Park and there are the first signs of better things to come.
- Dandy Nicholls by Bob Roper
Dandy Nicholls is very much a trainer to be interested in when it comes to follow sprint racehorses. He is known as “king of the sprinters” and his stable has very few horses that run over more than a mile. 2009 has done nothing to harm his reputation from the punter point of view, although his position as top sprint trainer is very much under threat from Richard Fahey.
- Bill Ratcliffe by Bob Roper
Bill Ratcliffe has been a licensed trainer since 2006 and has impressed me immensely with the limited material he has had so far. Looking at his excellent website and reading the informative blog you get the distinct impression that this could be an establishment that is going to make waves in spite of difficult recessionary times. Certainly it’s not easy making progress with so few horses and the move to new premises in Newmarket from North Yorkshire at the beginning of the year could be a make or break move.
- Mark Johnston by Bob Roper
Although Mark Johnston has a really big stable of over 200 horses he is not renowned for having too many sprinting stars and most of his success over the years has been built up through his middle and long-distance runners. In addition, he gets plenty of 2 year old and 3 year old maiden and stakes winners and some of these horses end up contesting the best Group races. So there is some quality as well as quantity but it’s a little in short supply in the races that I specialize in.
- Bryan Smart by Bob Roper
North Yorkshire trainer, Bryan Smart, doesn’t look as if he is going to beat his best ever winner total in a year (2008 – 57, 2009 to date – 50). Having said this the trainer has had another highly respectable year and is still one to follow, albeit on a selective basis. Numerically, sprint winners are always more prolific than at other distances for the stable.
- Kevin Ryan by Bob Roper
Kevin Ryan’s stable is a big one of over 100 horses. It is not the easiest stable to find winners but increasingly the stable stars are sprinters and there are angles that can be used to over come the low strike rate. 2009 has been a slightly inconsistent one for the stable.
- Horse Racing Handicapping – Getting Started by Deon Du Plessis
Horse racing handicapping has been around for quite some time and it is still the most widely used “system” for picking winning horses. In any given race the odds are overwhelmingly against you. Regardless of how good or how lucky you are, you cannot help but lose more than you win.
- Horse Racing Systems Or Horse Racing Tipsters? Which Works Best to Find Those Winners? by Steve Knightsbridge
When betting on horses, many novice punters will start out by making their own selections. This usually leads to a hole in their bank balance before too long and they quickly realise that they need something extra to make their horse racing betting pay. The decision then becomes whether to use horse racing systems or horse racing tipsters or a combination of both.
- To Be a Successful Horse Racing Handicapper You Have to Shop For Deals by Bill Peterson
If you are one of the many people trying to make money by handicapping horse races, you know just how hard it is to make a profit. One of the reasons is the nature of horseracing itself. It is just a very unpredictable sport because there are so many variables. As if that wasn’t enough there is also the greed factor.
- What Kinds of Notes Do Professional Horse Players Keep? by Bill Peterson
You may have noticed, in the hundreds of articles I have written over the years, that I advocate keeping your own notes if you are serious about winning money betting on horses. If you could see my office you would realize that I practice what I preach. Not only do I keep notes on my laptop, but also on my notebook and even good old hard copies written in my own chicken scratching, scrawled, handwriting.
- Money Management is the Key to Making Money Betting on Horses by Bill Peterson
If you are serious about handicapping horse races and making money, then you should know the truth about money management. The truth is that becoming a great handicapper is not enough to make a profit wagering on horse races. I don’t care if you are the greatest handicapper that ever lived, it will still be difficult to have a positive return on investment (ROI) unless you are also a good money manager.
- Why Are Harness Racing Favorites Always Bet Down So Much? by Bill Peterson
One of the complaints I often hear from fellow horse players is that harness racing favorites are always bet down to ridiculously low odds. Of course, by favorite I mean the horse that goes off at the lowest odds in the race because more people have bet on it. It is true, harness racing seems to produce a lot of horses that go to post at very low odds.
- Harness Racing Longshots Secrets and Tips by Bill Peterson
When you say harness racing to a bettor, he or she usually thinks of short priced favorites with little chance of making a profit. But just like thoroughbred racing or any other form of wagering, when there is an underlay, a horse bet down below its fair odds value, there is an overlay. There are a few secrets and tips that might help you when looking for a good bet and picking a winner.
- Trainer Tips For Horse Racing Handicapping Success by Bill Peterson
They say a change is as good as a rest and that is certainly true when it comes to horses. They require stimulation like any other living being. Horse racing handicapping is all about finding the horse that will surprise the crowd with a better than expected performance. So the obvious place to find a winner is any horse that has just had a change.
- Is Your Best Horse Racing Bet Tongue Tied? by Bill Peterson
If you are looking for a good bet in horse racing, then you should start paying close attention to the horses. That means looking at the actual horse, not just reading past performances. While past performances are important, what really matters is the condition of the horse on the day it races and also any equipment changes that may affect the runner’s performance. While most equipment changes are noted in the racing program, tongue ties are usually not listed.
- Spotting Good Long Shot Bets in Horse Races by Bill Peterson
If you are handicapping horse races for profit, you probably understand that the big money is in long shots. While the big payoffs are attractive, however, finding good long shot bets is not easy. There are usually some very good reasons for horses going off at long odds and they rarely win.
- Best Longshot Bets and the Worst Longshot Bets in Horse Racing by Bill Peterson
When betting on horse races, some people like to handicap a race, poring over the past performances and rating each runner’s abilities, while other people simply look at the odds board to pick a bet. Those that use the toteboard to determine a horse’s chances of winning often miss good longshot bets because they base their opinions solely on the crowds estimate of the runner’s chances.
- Looking For a Good Longshot Bet? Follow the Money by Bill Peterson
One of the real clues to a race horse’s ability is how it is bet in the pools. The smart money, otherwise known as “insider” money, is a real good clue to a horse’s chances of winning a race. While the general betting public only has the information in the past performances to rate a runner’s chances of winning, the insiders have information from the trainer as well as professional clockers who watch horses workout in the morning.
- Extra Place Or Show Money on a Horse is a Bad Sign For Win Bettors by Bill Peterson
If you are trying to make money betting on horses, then you are probably making win bets. They are usually the bet of choice of serious handicappers. Therefore, many people watch the win pools and odds to win and try to decipher what the flow of money means in those pools. What they fail to grasp, however, is that the other pools may actually tell more about a horse’s chances of winning.

- Barrel Racing Saddles Tips by Justin Strader
Barrel racing is an equestrian event in which a horse and rider try to complete a cloverleaf pattern around three preset barrels in the fastest time. The barrels are set in a triangle in the center of the ground. The sport tests the combination of the horsemanship skills of the rider with the athletic ability of the horse.
- Horse Racing Handicapping Tips That Work by Deon Du Plessis
Horse racing handicapping can get very complicated and for many the process of eliminating horses from a race is just overwhelming. If you don’t have an “analytical” mind you might be tempted to just pick horses based on your hunches or intuition – which as we all know is a recipe for disaster.
