horse racing kempton – Horse Racing – UK All Weather Courses

There are currently 5 All Weather race courses in the UK Lingfield Park, Kempton, Southwell, Wolverhampton and Great Leighs which is not is not currently active

Lingfield Park

Lingfield Park was the first all weather course in the UK. It was opened 20 years ago and is the home of the most prestigious all weather horse race the Winter Derby. Lingfield’s course is a triangular shaped layout on a polytrack surface.

Pointers.

With its sharp bends and short finishing straight this mean that horses that either front run or at least lie up handily with the pace have a good record. The draw can also play an important part in determining the winner. In sprint races horses drawn low have a distinct advantage especially in 5 and 6 furlong races.

Kempton Park

Overview

Opened in March 2006 this floodlit Polytrack synthetic dirt course is a right-handed oval of 8 or 10 furlongs, depending on whether the inner or outer bend is used.

Pointers.

Generally a pretty fair track high numbers do have a definite advantage in sprint races up to 7 furlongs. Because it is the only right handed all weather course it can pay to follow horses that have run well previously at the track.

Southwell

Overview

At Southwell the horses race on fibre sand which gives a much greater kickback than when racing on a polytrack surface. It is a lozenge shaped course with a golf course on the inside.

Pointers

Laid with fibresand which rides deep, stamina-laden performers hold an advantage over their rivals Horses that can run prominently and thus avoid the kickback of sand tend to run best. It is often the case that some horses really do not like either the kickback and/or running on the surface so it is often best to watch a horse the first time it runs at this course. In 5 furlong sprints horses drawn low tend to do well.

Wolverhampton

Overview

This popular Midlands course is one of the two all-weather tracks that benefit from flood lighting and so can stage evening meetings in mid-winter. The Friday and Saturday evening meetings are well supported even if the quality of the racing is not the greatest. It is a tight oval shaped course with a polytrack surface.

Pointers:

Because of it sharp bends this course is ideal for nimble runners who can hold their position. Many horses have thrown away their chances by running wide at the bends. Horses drawn low have a distinct advantage in 5 and 6 furlong sprints but in longer races the effect of the draw is less noticeable.

Great Leighs

This Essex track opened in 2008 but went into administration 9 months after opening. There have been several attempts to get its licence to race back again and it is hoped that meeting may be held again at this course from 2011.
