Why do we fans love horse racing so much when it is such a heartbreaking sport?

I love this sport but it breaks my heart when these wonderful athletes put so much heart into a race and end up injured. This sport seems to be consuming me lately.I cannot stop watching on weekends. How many of you are consumed?
